Lighting & Ventilation Issues in SRA Buildings

SRA buildings intend to serve the purpose of providing slum dwellers with housing and better living conditions. But in the current scenario, the quality of the SRA settlements needs reconsideration. The existing buildings, which are not able to meet the quality standards, should be revived with mitigation measures. This can be prevented only by the conscious and judicious design of such dwellings. More emphasis has to be given to the lighting and ventilation by the architects to provide SRA dwellings with better living conditions in the future.

Solar Access & Shadow Analysis

On analyzing the World wide scenario for Sunlight and Solar access regulations, it has been observed that all the countries (except Slovenia) are recommending analysis on 21st March. Based on the World wide scenario for Sunlight and Solar access regulations, the average sunlight hours benchmark observed is 3 hours or 30% of Analysis hours. Due to Monsoon during June, July and August, there is a high risk of Bacterial infection and mould growth. But, due to Higher Altitude of Sun on these 3 months, all the facades receive adequate solar radiation to prevent the risk. From Psychrometric chart, Passive heating is definitely not required for Warm and Humid Climate of Mumbai. Based on the study, it is recommended to carry out the shadow analysis for Annual average the impact should not be more than 30% of Analysis Hours.

The Solution for the Urban Parking Chaos

The concept allows sharing of parking space by one or more users, to utilize the existing parking space effectively and efficiently without pressuring the urban land to develop more parking infrastructure. In return, the fuel, time and money are saved by real-time information provided by the technology throughout the city. Eventually curbing down the congestion of streets, promoting smooth traffic flow, noise and air pollution reduction. The idea is to create a ‘parking space sharing ecosystem’ through agglomeration of technology (i.e. IoT) and gadgets available in the market to create a parking management tool.

Mobile Phone & Tower Radiation Analysis

Mobile phones and their base stations are two-way radios and they produce radio frequency radiation to communicate. Further, buildings are exposed to this radiofrequency radiation which are located in the line of sight of mobile towers (antennas) and within 300m of distance. Study shows that the mobile phone antennas transmit energy in a radiating pattern and the radiation intensity is highest within a range of 50 to 300 meters distance and at an angular placement of 5 to 10 degree from the plane of radiation. For such cases, a radiation audit has to conducted and necessary mitigation measures need to be implemented. In India, we follow the ICNIRP guidelines and it states that the exposure levels (in terms of power density) should not exceed 9.2 watt/sq. m.
